Identification of Trees Tree T5 - Blue Atlas Cedar (Cedrus atlantica 'Glauca') Spring Road Cemetery, Spring Road, Abingdon, OX14 1AZ (OS Ref: SU487975) (overhanging no.60 Anna Pavlova Close) Tree T6 - Blue Atlas Cedar (Cedrus atlantica 'Glauca') Spring Road Cemetery, Spring Road, Abingdon, OX14 1AZ (OS Ref: SU487975) (overhanging no.27 Spring Gardens) Description of the Works Remove all sections of large deadwood from throughout the crown of both trees. Reduce both crowns by up to 2.5-3 metres to stabilise and reduce risk of future limb loss. (This description of the proposed works is taken directly from the recommendations of the report - Arboricultural Tree Report - Cedar Trees at Spring Road Cemetery, Abingdon - prepared by Boward Tree Surgery (Oxford) Limited in October 2024 following a Visual Tree climbing survey (Copy attached). Reasons for the Works We are requesting consent to undertake these works as: - Work is required to stabilise the trees (see attached report which states that both trees have a Qualified Risk Assessment Score of 4, meaning that they should be considered for remedial works to make safe). - We have concerns regarding the future safety of these trees without these works with regard to both life and property because of their estimated potential future height and spread. - Reducing the canopy as proposed would reduce (but not remove) the source of a very significant nuisance to us. At present the canopy overhangs the garden of no. 27 Spring Gardens by 4.5m and no. 60 Anna Pavlova Close by 3m, this severely restricts our enjoyment of our properties by: i. Significantly shading our gardens rendering them unusably cold at certain times ii. Blocking sunlight to the solar panels at no.60 Anna Pavlova Close for an estimated 40% of the time. iii. Dropping thousands of catkin-like cones and needles which fill several dustbins and which we have to clear. iv. Birds visiting the trees using the branches overhanging both our gardens, continually fouling our properties and garden furniture, which is very unpleasant and unhealthy, and requires continual cleaning. v. They have branches which are close to our homes, and we worry they will fall and injure someone. (Branches have on 2 previous occasions fallen from other trees covered by the TPO (now felled) on to no.27 Spring Gardens.) vi. The presence of the trees and the excessive shading has also given rise to a ball like fungus in the garden of no. 27 which excretes a black slime over the ground. Items iii and iv involve us all in considerable unnecessary effort which, as we are all retired is an increasing strain and, as we age further, will involve unnecessary expense when we are physically unable to do the work ourselves. In addition to the above specific concerns we note that the current tree heights are given as 18m. Published data states that Blue Atlas Cedar can grow to 36 metres and should not be planted in close proximity to housing.
