  5. Decision MadeP25/S2361/TCA

Overview: Ancient weeping Willow having recently suffered from limb failures on two separate occasions in the last 2 months. Not many Weeping Willows are able to attain such significant size, as some propensity to structurally lose canopy components where weight and branch unions or defects reduce structural integrity. We have had two massive heavy lateral failures, one in June and one in July. The June failure was compromised by an internal defect, the second failure in July was more a characteristics of the Salix spp. Canopy reduction is a management option where the tree displays current structural failures and further anticipated failures. Normally intervention is a last resort and we are at that point now and a trees biomechanical strengthening strategies are not proving effective enough. I believe the tree was reduced some 20 years ago which would explain the lack of apical leader hormonally controlling favourable subordinate lateral spread. This is not ideal in natural successful canopy morphology. Specification: â¿¢ Reduce overall canopy by 2.5-3.0 metres, leaving a flowing canopy outline. This will provide a new canopy template for the foreseeable management, which could be a light cycle of pruning every 4 to 6 years, subject to ongoing inspections.
