• P22/S1422/TCATree X located at front of Stonesfield. Mature Sycamore which has been historically topped at approximately 3m and has regenerated many years ago. It has an included union which has snapped out and has taken pretty much half of that leader out, approximately 7-8m from the top of the tree (8-9m up from ground level). It has compromised the structural integrity of the tree but it is relatively sheltered and I do not feel there is a need to necessarily remove that section completely, certainly not remove the tree. To reduce the tip weight on that section by 2-2.5m, bringing back in line with main canopy and rest of the tree. I think that the wood is good enough to cope with the wind loading that would be associated and the tree will look after itself once these works have been done. There is not huge competition for that tree to be pushing on, it is a relatively mature tree, not super large and the level of jeopardy is relatively low; if that section was to fail it would be caught by the rest of the canopy. It will not materially alter the shape or form of the tree. The only issue is whether it has split further down which is not clear from ground level. If it has continued down past the break, it might have to be removed back down to source which again, would not significantly materially change the shape and structure of the tree, unless you were to look up at that particular wound site. This would be assessed at branch level. T1 and T2 are mature Sycamores which are situated immediately adjacent to a stone boundary wall, upon a raised bank. They are both developing phototropically and have been historically topped at approximately 4-5m above ground level with regeneration growth at these points; these trees are now effectively lapsed pollards; whether they were cyclically maintained as pollards is unclear. There are decay pockets at crown break from historic branch removal wound sites and limb failures. The cavities extend more than halfway through every one that have been inspected and is only by virtue that the relatively sheltered position of these trees that they are still self-supporting. Both trees have a lean towards the adjacent properties. The options here, because of the nature of the trees are relatively limited and the structural integrity of these trees is questionable for the longer term. To reduce the side growth over the road towards the property on both trees by 1.5-2m from branch tips to mitigate torsional wind loading and abate the immediate hazard of limb failure across the road. To reduce the two trees back by 1.5-2m from branch tips and a similar amount from the top section that emanates over the road. This would not materially change the height of the tree, it would reduce the canopy spread from the centre of the tree across the road. T1 from 12m to 10-10.5m and T2 from 11m to 9-10m.
