Council planning record

T1 - Yew (Taxus baccata) (i) Fell to ground level and remove stump. (ii) Plant replacement tree in the rear garden area i.e. Irish Yew (Taxus baccata 'Fastigiata'). Planting stock will be semi-mature container grown tree with a minimum height of 3.0m. Whilst we understand that the reason for the proposed works is not required for a CA notice, it was considered useful to provide some further explanation i.e. the tree has been subject to severe historic pruning resulting in the canopy being completely removed and the height reduced to leave a single topiarised column approx 4.0-4.5m high. See photo P1 attached as appendix 2. Extensive landscape works have been implemented around the tree, resulting in significant level changes and construction of retaining walls in close proximity to the tree stem. The retaining wall to the south is now showing signs of 'direct root damage'. See photo P2 at appendix 2. The severe reduction in height and spread and the back garden location means that the tree cannot be seen from any public viewpoint and as such, has no public amenity value and makes no contribution to the landscape of the conservation area. It is suggested that a better quality tree in a more suitable location will provide more long term value to the garden landscape whilst eradicating the current compatibility issues and associated maintenance.
