• P12/S3421/TCA1 no. Sequoiadendron giganteum - sadly deceased located in the Castle Grounds with public access. As discussed these trees are particularly vulnerable to Armellaria issues as well as lightning. In order to understand the situation I propose some excavations and to remove a small section of bark for analysis of cambium and see if we can shed some light on the issue. This link: www.forestry.gov.uk/greysquirrel will take you to the Forestry Commission website which details their strategy for dealing with grey squirrels and their subsequent damage to trees. Whilst I sympathise with the Parks neighbour 'emotive squirrel feeding' the subtle and sometimes very difficult to spot damage to the important urban tree landscape is catastrophic. This invasive non native grey squirrel can cause structural failure in trees, limits the lifespan of younger trees (Blenheim Palace are having to fell 60% of new trees planted in the 1970s due to squirrel damage). Apart from deformed canopies the majority of attacked trees will not even be able to become semi-mature. Proposed works: liaising with Brian attending site in late Sumer, carefully dismantle tree in sections using modern rigging techniques. Cavity at 5m extending 1.1m into trunk when probed radially occupying up to 1/3rd cross section of stem diameter. Some evidence of previously failed limbs in crown with broken branch stubs and cavities now visibly decayed some partially occluded with callous, (solid when probed). Primary limb at 14m approx facing east is longitudinally split with associated decay now visible. Some primary limbs in upper canopy are over extended with fibre buckling indicting increase in loading. Minor dead bark and exudation below lesion at 12m on primary limb north possibly indicating split and internal decay formation. Some deadwood is visible in the crown. Annual extension growth of up to 350mm indicating good vigour and vitality. Recommended works - Selectively reduce up to 20% limbs, supported on sections of decay and cavity formation at points of previous limb failure, stabilise major dead wood. Inspect biennially.
